Welcome Home, Grandma:

Designing a Multigenerational Space in the Pacific Northwest

At Visual PNW, we love projects that go beyond walls and windows—projects that are about people, family, and new beginnings. One of our most meaningful projects this spring is a basement remodel designed with one special person in mind: Grandma.

This family is relocating from Houston, Texas, to a beautiful new home here in the Pacific Northwest. With them comes Grandma, who will be moving into a newly converted basement apartment—her own space within the family home. The mission is clear: create a warm, welcoming, and future-ready living space where she can live comfortably and independently for years to come.

Designing for Today—and Tomorrow

While Grandma is currently mobile and active, the family wanted to plan ahead and ensure the space will remain accessible in the future. That means thoughtful choices around layout, circulation, and access. With limited square footage and a tight budget, we decided to start the project by demoing the existing basement walls—getting a clear look at what’s behind the drywall before diving into full design.

This early exploration uncovered key details we needed to plan around: structural posts (including a pair of significant 4x12 and 4x6 beams), existing ductwork, outdated plumbing, and electrical systems in need of upgrading—including a subpump that had stopped working. By identifying these “unknowns” early on, we can better align the design and construction with the client’s budget and avoid surprises later.

A Home Within a Home

One of the most important design decisions is the entrance to Grandma’s new apartment. Right now, there's an older sliding glass door, but we’re replacing it with a secure, elegant French door that will give her both privacy and independence. In the long term, we’re planning for a no-stairs pathway from the driveway to ensure full accessibility if needed.

Until then, Grandma can easily navigate the stairs and will enjoy her own entrance, her own space, and a true sense of belonging in this new chapter of family life.

Moving Forward, Together

This project is just beginning—demo is underway, the plans are coming together, and spring is in full bloom here in the Pacific Northwest. We’re honored to help this family settle into their new home and to welcome Grandma with the care and comfort she deserves.

Stay tuned for updates as we bring this multigenerational vision to life!
